Thanksgiving [Nov. 23rd, 2007|11:00 am]
[Current Location |My desk]

[Current Music |Whistle Down the Wind]

Well, another Thanksgiving has come and gone. The gathering was a little smaller this year than normal. Aunt Joanne and Uncle Royce spent this year volunteering at a soup kitchen with members of their church, which is a great thing to do, but it doesn't make them any less missed. Aunt Marilyn stayed home this year and made dinner for Mike and Chris and Chris's boyfriend. So this year it was just Mum, Pap, me, my older sisters and all six of their children, and Aunt Nellie and Uncle Bill; which really is more people than our house was meant to have in it.

I was rather surprised and a little pleased that something of a to-do was made about me learning to knit. I figured that I had to show the scarf I finished to Mum and Aunt Nellie because they've both been so encouraging since I started learning and Aunt Nellie gave me so much yarn; but at a gathering like this you can't show something just to anyone, everyone ends up seeing it. By the end of it all, I had serveral more requests for scarves and hats, and my sister Tonya is wanting me to show her how to knit over my Winter Break.

On Wednesday, at work, Martha told me that she's going to have me working on a special project today. This announcement filled me with a small sense of trepidation, last time she assigned me to a special project I was spending every Thursday helping Linda reorganize the videos and dvds. This is nothing quite that much of a pain in the neck; I've just got to help Linda and Cameron take down the Fall decorations and put up the Christmas ones; which is not all that different from what I'm going to be doing at home this weekend.

Halloween and after [Oct. 30th, 2007|08:04 pm]

I will never understand why Franklin has the trick or treating on the night before Halloween. I got home early enough today to take Syra around the neighborhood. She seemed rather pleased about that.

Well, it looks like everything is set for the Art Club's trip to Boston next month. I'm really excited. This is going to be great. Three days mucking around Boston with the Art Club...all five of us. And Allison and I are planning on taking a short detour into Providence one morning, and a little side trip into Salem since they're both so close.

I heard the news today, oh boy...er...and girl [Oct. 9th, 2007|11:41 pm]

[Current Mood | sleepy]

My da got news from Abby today. She is officially having a girl. This makes my fourth niece. Surprise, another girl. I mean, I've got three sisters, my sister Tracy had both girls, my mum has a sister, and my grandmum had three sisters. There is definatly a trend toward having girls in this family. My sister Tonya being the only exception, having only one girl out of five children.

I also found out that Tracy's step-daughter Mandy is having another boy. That means I'm going to have a second great nephew. I still think that it is absolutely crazy that I'm a great aunt. I mean, I think of the words great aunt and all I get is awful flashbacks of being about twelve and visting my great aunt Cathrine at the hospital right before she died. I don't really remember her very well; I just remember her being real sick and barely able to move.

Ah, well. It's late. I should probably sign out and get some sleep. I work late and I've got class tomorrow. It would not do well for me to nod off during lecture or between the stacks.

[Current Mood | tired]

My friend Tonya showed me this little bit of hilarity. Bolded the bits that apply to me.

You may be from Ohio (pronounced "oh-hi-oh") if:

You know all the 4 seasons: winter, still winter, almost winter and construction.

You live less than 20 miles from some college or university.

You know what a "buckeye" really is, and have a recipe for candy ones, and usually look around when someone says that they have buckeyes.

Michigan usually brings a scowl.

You know if other Ohioans are from southern or northern Ohio as soon as they open their mouths.

You know how to correctly spell Cincinnati.

"Vacation" means going to Florida, Hilton Head, or Florida.

You measure distance in minutes.

Your school classes were canceled because of cold.

Your school classes were canceled because of heat.

You've had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day, and maybe even use the "defrost" and "A/C" in the same day.

You end your sentences with an unnecessary preposition. Example: "Where's my coat at?"

You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

Drinking beer underage is a weekend ritual.

You carry bungee cords in your car.

You know what "pop" is.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

The local paper covers national and international headlines on one page but requires six pages for sports.

You call it Krogers even though it is Kroger.

Girls wear miniskirts with uggs in the winter and complain of it being too cold outside. (I have seen far too many girls do this to still have any faith in the good sense of mankind.)

You know someone that has a beat up pick-up truck. You also know someone that has a BMW.

Abby [Aug. 15th, 2007|12:32 am]
[Current Mood | worried]

Well, my sister is in the hospital, again. According to Mum she's been really dehydrated and nauseous since she's been pregnant. She's been in and out of the hospital about it once before already. Mum said she's not been able to keep any food down at all. I really hope that she'll be alright. I've, unfortunately, not had the opportunity to go see her as yet; but if she is not home soon I definately shall.

On the plus side, it has been conclusively determined that she isn't having twins.

I got a bit of rather depressing news from Adam last time I talked to him. Apparently, the circle of friends that I honestly believe is the only thing that kept me from going totally, barking mad in my high school years has, in the last four years been reduced to a loose association of the few of us that are still speaking to each other.

Josh has somehow managed to alienate literally everyone but me and one or two family members and Erik has mostly dropped off the face of the Earth to only be found occasionally, usually by Holly, Cody, or Matt. For the most part it is down to me and Adam and the two of us are working most of the time and I'm going to be starting back at classes soon.

I suppose this is another example of the times a-changing.

So...this morning I went to turn on my computer and instead of coming on, the screen just turned blue and stayed that way for about fifteen minutes, at which point I decided to just forget about using the computer anytime before or after I was at the library today. This is like the fourth or fifth time my computer's done something like this. I really shouldn't be too surprised, I've had the thing for about eight years now and it's been on it's last legs for a while. When we get home, I'm going to have my dad take a look at it, but I really don't think there's anything to be done for it. I fear I'm going to have to bite the bullet, dredge up what's left of my savings, and get a new computer.

Preparing to Leave [Mar. 10th, 2007|11:25 pm]

[Current Mood | excited]

Well, I'm mostly packed up and tomorrow afternoon I will be heading off to the airport to leave for Rome. I can't wait. I've been wanting to see Rome and Athens since I was about 12. I'm a bundle of nerves, worring about whether I've got everything I'll need. But, that's just me I guess. I'm an Aquarius; that means I'm friendly and I'm paranoid. While I know everything will be fine, that won't stop me from worrying about it.

The only thing I'm not thrilled about is the fact that my classes start back the day after I return. So, I will be expected to make an appearance at an 8:30 am class all kinds of jet-lagged and stupid. I'm really not looking forward to that. Plus I've got quite a lot of make up work due for a class I have later that day and the one I have Thursday. At this rate; I'm never going to get caught up.

At least that's what they're calling it on the local news. For about the last week the weather around here has been the coldest we've seen in months and today it started snowing at around noon...and only stopped just a few minutes ago. There's got to be at least six or seven inches of snow on the ground. Most of the local schools are already listed as being closed tomorrow, and unless the roads get better soon I'm willing to bet that a few professors will likely be cancelling their classes tomorrow.

As for me, I'm sitting in front of the space heater and trying to keep warm. For reasons that I don't understand my room is incapable of retaining heat in the winter. To keep from freezing I've got to wear many layers and keep my space heater on for most of the day.

But, on the up side, I'm turning 22 tomorrow. And Joanne was so nice today at work. She told me that she would cover the night shift at the library by herself since there usually isn't much going on Wednesday nights, so I can have my birthday off. John, our director agreed to this arrangement and said that I can just come in a few extra hours later in the week to make up for it. Thanks to the weather I'm likely going to have to wait until the weekend to actually do anything for my birthday, but this is still really great.

The fact that I'm going to be 22 tomorrow really hasn't sunk in yet. It just seems like it's too soon; like my last birthday just passed.

Bomb threats at school today... [Oct. 18th, 2006|07:23 pm]

[Current Location |At the Library]
[Current Mood | bored]

Today, there was not one, but two bomb threats at my university. The first one was at about 10:30 this morning, the other one about 4:15.

When the first one happened I was in my acting class. Sarah had just started giving her presentation when the fire alarms started going off. At first we thought that it might just be a fire drill; but one of the maintenence guys burst in and told us all to get out of the building. We all got our shoes(we sit on gym mats in the acting class, and have to take our shoes off) and got out as quick as we could. Once we were out in the parking lot someone filled us in on what was going on. We couldn't believe that there was a bomb threat. I mean, there is literally nothing on this campus worth blowing up. My only concern was the possibility of the hypothetical bomb being in Thesken Hall; because that's where most, if not all, of the chemistry classes take place; so if that goes up that's pretty much it. Most of us really figured that there wasn't really much to worry about when it took the bomb squad about an hour to appear at our school. By 1:00 the entire campus had been checked out and was clear with no word of anything actually being found. Which is good, but somewhat irritating in retrospect. You know, being put through all that bother with a false alarm. A lot of people on campus are guessing that it was someone who desperately wanted a good excuse to get out of their exams.

Then, things calmed down and everyone went back to their business. After my next class finished I went down to the student center and bought a late lunch. Next thing I know; the alarms are going off and we're being ordered out of the building. This time it was just irritating. Two bomb threats in less than six hours...that's got to be some kind of record. I'm thankful that nothing was apparently found in either case, but I'm also incredibly irritated that people would call in false bomb threats. As if college isn't stressful enough, we don't need this kind of thing going on as well.

Cole Gray [Oct. 13th, 2006|02:13 am]

[Current Mood | sad]

On October 7th Cole Gray, one of the guys I graduated with, died. He was 22 years old and had suffered from health problems for a large part of his life(I believe that he had cystic fibrosis, but it's been many years since the knowledge of his particular ailment was given to me and I'm not entirely certain). Cole was just one of the nicest, most good natured people that I've ever known. There was never I time when I saw him when he wasn't smiling about something. I've only just discovered that his funeral was earlier this afternoon. But, I know where he was burried at, so when I have the chance I'm going to go pay my respects.

On an even more depressing note, Cole is the third guy from my graduating class to die in the last three years. First was Tyler who was killed in a car accident a few months after graduation. Then there was Brandon...there wasn't really that much that wasn't wrong with Brandon; he spent most of our senior year out for various health problems. I've got to say that things are not looking bright for the class of '03.

[Current Mood | rushed]

So much to do, so little time to actually get any of it done. I'm starting to believe that half asleep is a natural state of being.

Don't mistake me, I really enjoy college. I like going to my classes and learning what is to be learned there; but it is rather challenging to scrape together the time to do all of the homework I get assigned. Between my time in class and my time at work I hardly have time for anything else. I'm just lucky that my work at the library isn't too horribly strenuous and I can sometimes get class work done there.

I think that part of it is some of the classes I have this semester. At least three of them are very intensive. My Intro to Shakespeare class is really interesting; but we are covering a play a week, which if nothing else, makes it a very reading heavy class. A fun and interesting class, but a very reading heavy one.

Then there is my Ancient Philosphy; another really interesting, but book heavy class. And it only meets once a week on Tuesdays; but those meetings last about 3 and a half hours every Tuesday.

And there's my Political Science, which is only mildly interesting; but is a requirement, hence my presence there. It is also a work heavy and rather frustrating class. At least half of the time the assginments are due by e-mail to the instructor, ussually at some point before class. That just really gets on my nerves.

I'm glad that I took the Acting class that I'm in. It rounds out my hours requirement, is quite fun, and is reletively low stress.

Well, that's enough complaining about my classes, I need to work on finishing Henry IV part one.

Well, classes started today. Things turned out fairly well. I think that I'm going to quite enjoy my Shakespeare class. We're starting The Taming of the Shrew, which I've been wanting to read. My philosophy class is probably going to be very interesting(any class taught by Angela Yesh is going to be interesting); but I think that it's going to get to me being 3 hours and 40 minutes long. Lucky it's only on Tuesdays. I've got Acting for the Non-major and Politics and National Issues(which I wouldn't be taking if I didn't need a poli-sci class). All in all not a bad first day back. I'm not looking forward to working the late shift at the library tomorrow. I really think that I'm probably going to be dead on my feet by the time I get home.

The construction in the library is finally done and we are able to actually be in the library. However, this means that we all have to undertake the long and exhausting task of moving everything out of the trailer and back into the library. For the last two days I've been coming in about three hours early to help with the move however I can. I spent most of this morning helping to move stuff and the afternoon helping to arrange things within the library. I am beat. But, on the plus side, it looks like we are going to reach our goal of being up and running by the time classes start back on Tuesday. And that's good. It's good to be back in the library after spending the summer in that cramped little trailer.

Where did the Summer go? [Aug. 17th, 2006|01:57 am]

[Current Mood | tired]

It seems like Summer Break just started, how on earth is it time for classes to start back? My fall classes start on Tuesday. And what a first day; Introdiction To Shakespeare from 1:00 till 2:15 and Ancient Philosophy from 6:00 till 9:40. These are probably going to be two of the most interesting and most head-splody classes that I'm going to have this semseter; but at least I've got pleanty of time between them.

Most of the things that I planned on getting done during the summer are half done at best. There were a couple dozen books I planned on reading and I've only finished about a quarter of them. I planned on finishing some of my stories; and none of them have gotten past the first chapter. I had intended on taking some of that stuff cluttering things up around here and selling them at the flea market; and I have not done this. Ah well, I still have time to work on all of these things; although soon I will just have less time than I have had up to this point.
